Description
Pomboz Castle, located in Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille, is a discreet former manor house set between wooded hillsides and the shores of Lake Bourget. Less well known than nearby landmarks, it is nevertheless part of the local historical landscape.
Originally dating back to the medieval period, the castle was modified several times over the centuries. It once belonged to noble families who managed the surrounding lands, between lake and mountains. Its location was strategic, close to historic routes linking the Rhône River to Lake Bourget, an important corridor for trade and movement.
The Pomboz estate was also connected to local agricultural and wine-growing activities, which still shape the Chautagne area today. Like many estates of its time, the castle combined residential use with the exploitation of nearby land.
Today, the castle is privately owned and not open to visitors, but it can be seen from certain viewpoints around the village and nearby paths. It provides an interesting historical reference point, complementing a visit to the nearby Hautecombe Abbey.
While not a major tourist site, Pomboz Castle helps to understand the structure of the area, shaped over time by exchanges between the Rhône, the lake, and the surrounding reliefs.
