The backwaters
Description
The backwaters, known locally as lônes, are former branches of the Rhône, shaped over time by the river’s natural movements.
In the past, the Rhône flowed freely across the valley, creating a complex network of meanders and wetlands. With human developments, some of these side channels became disconnected, forming the backwaters we see today.
These areas have become true refuges for biodiversity. Calmer and sheltered from the main current, they provide ideal conditions for wildlife and plant life to thrive.
Paddling through a backwater means entering a different world—more intimate, quieter—where you can experience the river as it once was: wild and untamed.
